Securing a R10 Million DTIC Capital Investment Grant

The Challenge

A leading company in South Africa’s printing industry was preparing to make a substantial capital investment in one of its production facilities in the Western Cape.  Before proceeding, the business wanted to determine whether the planned investment qualified for any capital investment incentives available through the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC).  Agilequity had a long-standing working relationship with the company and the company’s CFO asked Agilequity if the investment would qualify for DTIC support.

Following an initial assessment by Agilequity, it was confirmed that the proposed investment met the eligibility criteria for a DTIC capital investment grant, with a potential grant value of approximately R10 million.  It is worth noting at this point that when Agilequity provides an opinion of this nature there is an 80% probability that the project will in fact qualify for a DTIC grant.  Although the opportunity was significant, the client’s finance team had limited experience with the DTIC grant application process and recognised the importance of submitting a compliant application within the required timeframes. Agilequity was therefore appointed to manage the end-to-end grant application process.

The Approach

Agilequity worked closely with the client’s Business Process Improvement Lead to prepare and submit the grant application. A key project consideration was the DTIC’s requirement that applications be submitted before orders for qualifying capital assets are placed, making timing critical.

The project team coordinated the collection of supporting information, prepared the required documentation, and managed the entire application process. Throughout the project, Agilequity provided guidance on the programme requirements, helping to streamline what can often be a complex and administratively demanding process while enabling the client to remain focused on day-to-day operations.

The Outcome

Within four months, the DTIC approved the grant application and allocated R10 million towards the client’s qualifying capital investment—representing approximately 15% of the eligible project value.

By identifying the available funding opportunity, confirming the project’s eligibility, and managing the application process from start to finish, Agilequity helped the client secure a substantial non-repayable government incentive to support its investment programme.  Without the help of Agilequity this grant funding may not have been approved.
