There’s a rather expensive sentence I hear from infrastructure project owners:
“We’ve already started construction.” 😬
Four words that can potentially close the door on millions of rands in grant funding.
Because when businesses budget for major infrastructure, they naturally think about engineers, contractors, equipment, approvals and financing.
What often isn’t on the checklist?
Government incentives.
The Critical Infrastructure Programme (CIP) is one of those incentives worth checking before the first shovel hits the ground.
For qualifying projects, the CIP can contribute 10%–30% of eligible infrastructure development costs, up to R50 million.
That could include infrastructure such as:
- Water
- Energy
- Roads and rail access
- Bulk infrastructure
- ICT connectivity
Now, R50 million probably won’t make your infrastructure project cheap. 😅
But it can make the funding structure look considerably more interesting.
There are, of course, qualifying requirements around things like the applicant, B-BBEE status, the infrastructure itself and how the project is structured.
But one of the most important considerations is timing.
If construction has already commenced by the time the grant conversation starts, you may have left it too late.
Which is why government incentives shouldn’t be something you investigate once the project budget is finalised.
They should be part of the early project-planning conversation.
So before approving that infrastructure CAPEX budget, add one more line to the agenda:
“What incentives could help fund this?”
It’s a small question.
On the right project, it could have an answer worth up to R50 million.
